The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club

May 26, 2020

This did not disappoint. Although I was surprised at the similarities between this plot and its resolution and that of Sayers’s first novel Whose Body? I suspect that once you’ve read one Sayers, the rest get somehow easier–her plotting is so complicated, as is her characterization. Wimsey is quite lovable in this one, and his relationship with Bunter is explained a bit more. Another thing: Sayers’s frankness about sex is endlessly surprising to me–I’m trying to think about the other novels I’ve read from this period, and some of them are still pretty Victorian in that regard. I look forward to reading the next one…
